Quick start
How to play a MIDI file online
What it does
Built for listening and practising, not for downloading
Local processing
Parsing, visualization and synthesis all happen in your browser. Your file, its name and what you play are never sent to a server.
Full General MIDI set
All 128 melodic programs plus drums on channel 10, so bass, strings, brass and percussion tracks sound as the file intended.
Honest about limits
Oversized, damaged or silent files get a specific message. Unsupported browsers can still inspect the file and the roll; only sound needs AudioWorklet.
No library, no exports
There is no song catalogue and no MP3 or WAV download here. Bring the MIDI files you already have the rights to use.
FAQ
Questions about playing MIDI files in the browser
Is my MIDI file uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read with the browser's File API and parsed by JavaScript running on this page. The only downloads are the page itself, the instrument sound bank and, if you ask for it, the demo file. Nothing about your file leaves your device.
Why does the first Play take a few seconds?
The player needs a General MIDI sound bank (about 22.6 MB) to turn notes into sound. It is fetched once and cached by your browser; later files start almost instantly.
Can I slow a song down to practise it?
Yes. Drag the speed slider or tap a preset between 0.25× and 2×. Pitch stays the same because the synthesizer re-times the notes instead of stretching audio.
Can I hear only one hand or one instrument?
Use M to mute a track or S to solo one or more tracks. This works per track even when two tracks share a MIDI channel, which is common in piano files with separate left-hand and right-hand tracks.
Does it work on iPhone and iPad?
File playback works in Safari on iOS 14.5 and later; tap Play after choosing a file so the browser lets audio start. Connecting an external MIDI keyboard is a different browser feature (Web MIDI) that Safari and iOS do not offer, and this player does not depend on it.
Which sounds are used, and are they licensed?
Instruments come from the FluidR3 General MIDI SoundFont by Frank Wen in its mono conversion by Michael Cowgill, both released under the MIT license, played by the Apache-2.0 licensed SpessaSynth engine. The full notices are on the How it works page.
Can I download MP3 or WAV, or find songs here?
Not in this version. This site plays files you already have; it does not host a song library, offer MIDI downloads, or export audio.
What are the limits?
Files up to 10.0 MB and 50,000 notes. Standard MIDI Files of format 0, 1 and 2 are accepted, including .rmi and .kar containers. Damaged files are reported with a reason instead of failing silently.
